Here are a few tips you can use for working with the registry on your computer. More than likely, if you're looking for this type of information you are having registry errors or other registry problems. Registry errors are a major problem for any computer, and it affects all Windows operating systems.

Windows vista is no exception, it continues to have errors and problems like all the other operating systems before it. Working with the registry can be very challenging. Even experienced computer technicians have a hard time. If you ever looked at your Windows registry you can get overwhelmed by amount of files.

As always, before you attempt to modify anything you should create a backup. If you happen to know which file is given you the problem you can manually edit or delete it. You can manually navigate to your computer, windows folder, and find the file that says Regedit. Clicking it will open up and expose your registry files. From there you will have to navigate through the thousands of files to find the correct one. But remember, if you edit or delete the wrong file your computer may become unusable or unstable.

Whenever your computer starts or loads any software it has for reference registry. It references the entry that corresponds with the software that is loading to get the correct settings. If the entry is corrupted or damaged, you will experience Windows errors. A bloated or corrupt registry will also cause slow startups, slow program load times, crashes, freezes, blue screens, extremely slow shutdowns, and data loss. Some computers will just shut off and reboot for no reason. These are all caused by entry errors.

Another way, you can access your registry manually is to type regedit into the run box from your start menu. By default Windows vista did away with the run box, but you can enable it by hitting the Windows icon and R on your keyboard. Then type C:Windows
egedit.exe

There is much simpler way to repair and clean your system. And that's with a registry repair program. It is much safer and faster. Plus it will find a lot of orphaned files which you no longer need. This is the preferred way to clean or repair your computer. With a few clicks of your mouse you can run a full scan and repair your PC in a couple minutes.

Maintaining a clean and properly running registry is very important to any computer. The biggest problem for windows startup or shutdown problems are because of errors. Cleaning and repairing your system is like giving your computer a good tuneup. Windows will not be looking at entries that are trying to reference software that is no longer installed on your computer. Every time you uninstall a program, in most cases, it leaves behind a registry key that is no longer needed.

I believe that all computer owners should invest in good software to maintain their computer's operating system. Preforming regular maintenance on your PC will save you an expensive in shop repair later down the road. Like the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So avoid problems before they happen by running regular scans on your PC.
